Associate Professor Brian Kenneth Owler

A/Prof Brian Owler is an adult and paediatric neurosurgeon who trained in Australia and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2006. His clinical practice includes the treatment of cranial and spinal disorders.

He has a particular interest in the management of brain tumours and cerebral metastases. He works closely with several medical and radiation oncologists in a multidisciplinary team. A/Prof Owler is experienced in the assessment and management of hydrocephalus, including normal pressure hydrocephalus, and other CSF circulation disorders such as pseudotumour cerebri. A/Prof Owler also performs deep brain stimulation surgery for conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor, Dystonia and Cerebral Palsy.

Disorders of the cervical and lumbar spine which include common disorders such as disc protrusions and slipped discs are also treated by A/Prof Owler. In many instances these conditions may be managed through a minimally invasive approach whether it be for a simple microdiscectomy or a more complex spinal fusion. A/Prof Owler also has experience in the management of basilar invagination and similar problems.

A/Prof Owler has a PhD from the University of Sydney and spent 18 months performing research at the Academic Neurosurgery Unit at the University of Cambridge. He is Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Sydney. Apart from active clinical research, he is responsible for the direction of basic science research in the Kid's Neurosurgical Research Laboratory within the Kid's Research Institute at the Children's Hospital at Westmead. His research topics include investigating new treatments for the management of hydrocephalus, paediatric brain tumours and spinal cord injuries.

A/Prof Owler is also a member of Council of the NSW AMA representing surgeons. He serves on a number of other clinical committees such as the NSW AMA Hospital Practice Committee, the Westmead Senior Clinical Council and the Westmead Medical Staff Council Executive.

Consultations with A/Prof Owler are available through rooms at Westmead, Norwest as well as the Sydney Adventist Hospital. A/Prof Owler is a Visiting Medical Officer at the Children/s Hospital at Westmead, Westmead Hospital, Westmead Private Hospital, Sydney Adventist Hospital and Norwest Private Hospital.
